9 Core Quaker Beliefs

9 Core Quaker Beliefs

As Inspired by Arthur Larrabee

Friends at Midcoast Monthly Meeting watched a video of Arthur explicating 9 Core Beliefs on June 9, 2019. Friends' response was generally positive, although some present asked that we modify some of the language and so we have. All wanted to point out that we do not propose this as dogma and that not all Friends present were entirely comfortable with various aspects of the list, nor should we expect that.

1

There is a living, dynamic, spiritual presence at work in the world which is both within us and outside of us. This presence is called by many names, including God, the divine, the Light within, and inner Light.

2

There is that of the divine in everyone.

3

Each person is capable of the direct and unmediated experience of inner Light.

4

Our understanding and experience of the divine is nurtured and enlarged in community.

5

The Bible is one important spiritual resource, and the life and teachings of Jesus are relevant for many of us today.

6

The revelation of spiritual truth is continuing and ongoing.

7

We welcome truth from whatever source it may come.

8

Our inward experience of the Light transforms us and leads us into outward expressions of faithful living, witness, and action.

9

Modeling the divine presence in our lives is more important than espousing beliefs.
